MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Thousands of fish were killed in the southern German city of Eisleben after farmers dumped milk to protest EU quota policies, the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper said on Tuesday.

Around 200 German farmers gathered to pour away the milk into a river near the Helfta Abbey as a protest against the falling cost of milk and an EU plan to end production quotas. The milk then found its way into a pond via the sewage system, poisoning the fish.

Nuns from the abbey, who had spent ten years breeding the fish, are trying to pump out and clean the entire pond. The dead fish included goldfish and pike.

Farmers also blocked deliveries and held back dairy supplies to draw the attention to their protest against low milk prices, which they say have left them in financial ruin.

The protest was one of many across Europe. Earlier, dairy farmers in Belgium, Netherlands, France and some other European countries dumped several million liters of milk.

Farmers claim that dairy oversupply has cut producer prices to about 0.20 euros ($0.29) a liter from 0.40 euros ($0.59) two years ago, which they say they need to stay profitable, and blame the EU and individual governments.
