MOSCOW, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - The world's tallest dog, a 7-year-old harlequin Great Dane, has died of bone cancer in Sacramento, the U.S., the National Post reported.

Gibson, who stood 2.16 meters (7 ft 1 in) on his hind legs, was diagnosed with bone cancer earlier in the year and shortly after his front right leg was amputated. He then underwent chemotherapy to try and prevent the spread of the disease.

However, the cancer had spread to his spine and lungs and his owner Sandy Hall made the difficult decision to have Gibson put to sleep on August 7. Hall announced Gibson's death on the website remembergibson.com.

Gibson received the Guinness Record for the world's tallest dog in 2004 and appeared in commercials, magazines and talks shows like the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Tonight Show, Larry King Live.

He leaves behind a number of offspring including Brewster, his son.
