Michelle Obama has received a matryoshka, or Russian nesting dolls, as a present from Moscow nuns.

MOSCOW, July 7 (RIA Novosti) - Michelle Obama has received a matryoshka, or Russian nesting dolls, as a present from Moscow nuns.

The First Lady is in Moscow with her husband, U.S. President Barack Obama and their two daughters. Obama met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin earlier on Tuesday.

During the president's wife visit to the St. Demetrius Sisterhood, the only Orthodox Christian medical school in Russia, children from two children's homes read poems in Russian and English and gave her presents they had made themselves.

Matryoshka dolls are sets of dolls of decreasing size that fit into one another. The name matryoshka might have originated from the Russian first name Matryona, usually associated with a robust rustic Russian woman.

St. Demetrius Sisterhood was founded in 1992. The nurses are trained to care for HIV/AIDS infected patients under programs financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with the support of Russia's consumer rights regulator, Rospotrebnadzor.

After the visit to the school, Michelle Obama went to a concert at the Stanislavski and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Music Theatre together with Russian First Lady Svetlana Medvedev.
