KIEV, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - A Ukrainian opposition party leader demanded on Wednesday the dismissal of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's government over its handling of the global economic crisis, the UNIAN news agency said.

"The government's ineffective work throughout the year has caused what we see now - a catastrophic surge in prices and inflation. This government must be dismissed immediately," Viktor Yanukovych, leader of the pro-Russian Party of Regions, told the Crimea TV channel.

He said the "orange team," which won the 2004 elections, has repeatedly dragged Ukraine into different kinds of risky games both in foreign and domestic policy.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko dissolved the legislature on October 9 after the collapse of the ruling "orange" coalition of his Our Ukraine bloc and Prime Minister Tymoshenko's alliance over a host of differences.

Yushchenko called early elections for December 7.

However, Ukraine's deteriorating economic crisis and its need for financial assistance in the form of a $14 billion IMF loan forced the president to postpone snap polls by a week and reopen parliament to amend the country's budget and legislation "to overcome the negative effects of the global financial crisis."

"The elections will not take place on December 14," UNIAN quoted the Tymoshenko Bloc's deputy head Andriy Portnov as saying.

Portnov accused the president of threatening Ukraine's economic destruction, adding that the bloc would "take all possible legal steps to ensure the election does not start on December 14."
