BEIRUT, May 21 (RIA Novosti) - The Palestinian leadership is trying to negotiate a ceasefire at a refugee camp with the Lebanese military command and prime minister that is coming under attack from the Lebanese army.

The Nahr el Barid refugee camp near Tripoli is coming under tank and mortar fire from Lebanese troops that have blocked the camp and are shelling positions of the Islamist group Fath el Islam for the second day now.

"I hope that an agreement will be reached within the next two to three hours," a spokesman for the Palestinian Liberation Organization in Lebanon told a RIA Novosti correspondent.

He said the negotiations are being conducted by Abbas Zaki, head of the PLO office in Lebanon, and Abul Aineinen, a representative of the Fatah movement.

The PLO spokesman said a ceasefire would alleviate the humanitarian suffering in the camp which has 30,000 refugees, providing them with drinking water and medicine, treating the wounded, and removing the dead.

He said at least eight refugees have been killed and more than 60 injured.
