The first Soviet space suit SK-1 was designed specially for Yuri Gagarin. It is still on display at the museum of the aerospace company Zvezda. SK-1 marked the beginning of space suit design in Russia.
Space suits designed for space walks began to be developed in the USSR in 1964. There have been several generations of space suits since. Orlan-MK is the latest model.
Orlan-MK can operate in a vacuum and withstand huge fluctuations in temperature for up to seven hours. It is equipped with a built-in cosmonaut rescue system. Special engines help the cosmonaut to return to the space station in the event that he drifts away.
There are just six space suits of this model. They have a service life of four years, after which they need to be replaced.
