The six volunteers selected for the Mars-500 project have gone into voluntary isolation. The Institute of Medical and Biological Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences launched this experiment to simulate a flight to Mars. The participants entered the ground-based module an hour after speaking to journalists. The door was then closed and sealed. If everything runs smoothly, it will not be opened again until November 2011.

Alexei Sitev is leading the crew of Mars-500. A shipbuilding engineer by profession, he directed the diving training for the candidates of the International Space Station. Surgeon Sukhrob Kamolov will be the crew's doctor. Alexander Smoleyevsky, Wang Yue from China and Diego Urbina from Italy are the researchers onboard the experimental module. Roman Charle from France is the flight engineer.
The crew will spend more than 18 months in the experimental module which is located in downtown Moscow. During all of this time, they will communicate only with each other.
The experiment includes three stages: a 250-day “flight” from Earth to Mars, a 30-day “stay” on the Red Planet, and a 240-day “flight” home. After the experiment each participant will be rewarded with 3 million rubles.
