A humanoid robot conducted a wedding ceremony in Tokyo on Sunday - a world first, according to the manufacturer of the "I-Fairy," a four-foot (1.2 metre) tall seated robot with flashing eyes and plastic pigtails. Kokoro Co. said it was the first time a marriage had been led by a robot.
"Please lift the bride's veil," the robot said, waving her arms as the newlyweds kissed in front of about 50 guests. Wires led out from beneath her chair to a black curtain a few feet (metres) away, where a man crouched and clicked commands into a computer. Satoko Shibata, the bride, works at Kokoro Co. while the groom, Tomohiro Shibata, is a professor at a university teaching robotics.
The couple said they met through a project making robots.
"I always believed that robots and people should blend together in a daily life," Shibata said. She said she wanted the robot to "be part of the most important event of my life."
Family and friends smiled and laughed at the little robot during the ceremony, who ended the nuptials by declaring, "Congratulations on your wedding!"
Japan has one of the most advanced robotics industries in the world.
