Before the start of the 520-day-long Mars flight mission simulation project, eight volunteers went through a new test – this time for psychological compatibility. The Mars-500 project started in the Moscow Institute of Medical and Biological Problems and included 11 candidates: seven candidates from Russia and one each from China, France, Italy and Belgium. After the tests, six of them will be placed in a special module simulating a spaceship and will spend almost a year and a half in isolation. The candidates were divided into pairs. They will learn how to interact with each other – predict the movements of their partner, develop a strategy and reach the common ground – in the Paraflighter simulator.Paraflighter is a huge tube with a rubber pillow inside. A strong blast of wind pushes the pillow up in the tube, with candidates inside. The future cosmonauts have to remain up in the air and not to fall down.Specialists gave each of the eight participants heart-rate monitors and installed cameras in the simulator to analyse the volunteers’ behavior and their physical state. Six out of the eleven volunteers will be able to mount the Mars-500 module after all the tests.
