The Topol-M is rightfully called Russia’s “nuclear shield and sword.” The vehicles carry intercontinental ballistic missiles that can deliver nuclear warheads across a distance of more than 10,000 kilometers. When in the air the missile is constantly changing its trajectory, which makes it almost invincible for the enemy’s air defense.
It takes the mobile system just several minutes to get ready for action. The missile’s engines are capable of reaching the maximum boost-phase speed. This makes it impossible for the enemy to bring it down immediately after its launch, when it is most vulnerable.
Russian scientists are currently developing a new missile for the Topol-M. Its warhead will split into separate parts, each of which will pursue an individual target.
The Topol-M systems that are being prepared for the Victory Parade at the Alabino shooting range in the Moscow Region pose no danger. They carry empty containers instead of missiles. All the classified equipment has been dismantled. Russia’s “nuclear shields” will be transformed back into a fierce weapon after the parade on May 9 when they are put back on guard.
