"The FBI is requesting that states contact their Board of Elections and determine if any similar activity to their logs, both inbound and outbound, has been detected. Attempts should not be made to touch or ping the IP addresses directly," the FBI’s Cyber Division "flash" alert, obtained and released by the Yahoo News media outlet Monday, said.
The statement, dated August 18, also included a list of recommendations for the state officials to follow in light of the growing threat of new cyberattacks.
The warning comes after in June, a hacker allegedly gained access to Arizona state election officials’ login information, according to the FBI. The breach was followed by what the local election officials believe to be a cyberattack on Illinois voter registration system in July.
The FBI has said that a Russian hacker could be behind the Arizona cyberattack, raising concerns that foreign individuals or governments could interfere in the November presidential elections in the United States.
