Fear of Domestic Terrorist Attacks in US at Highest Level Since 2003 - Poll

Following the deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, fears of domestic terrorist attacks in the United States are at their highest level since 2003, a poll revealed on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to a CNN/ORC poll conducted after the Orlando shooting, 71 percent of respondents said further attacks of terrorism are very likely or somewhat likely in the United States over the coming weeks.

The number of respondents, who said an impending attack was very likely, stands 24 percent and represents the highest percentage since March 2003.

The poll also found that the overall number of people who said they felt an attack is imminent has increased more than 10 percent from November 2015, after the Paris terrorist attacks that killed 130 people and injured 368 more.

On Tuesday, US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the June 12 attack, which is the deadliest shooting in modern US history, was both an act of hate and an act of terror.

During the shooting, 29-year old US national Omar Matteen called emergency responders and pledged allegiance to the Daesh terrorist group, which is outlawed in the United States, Russia and numerous other countries.

About three-quarters of respondents said they were more concerned about lone wolf perpetrators like Mateen than attacks organized by a group, the poll found.
