A baby-giant, weighing almost 7 kg (15.4 pounds), was born in Kokshetau in northern Kazakhstan, the chief doctor of the regional maternity hospital said on Friday.
The newborn and her mother are feeling fine. “I had to do caesarean sections because the baby was a large girl, weighing 6,645 grams [14.6 pounds],” a hospital spokesman said.
The usual weight of a healthy newborn child is 3-3.5 kg (6.6 – 7.7 pounds). An infant up to 5 kg (11 pounds) is considered big, more than 5 and it is a “giant”. According to statistics, these big babies are a rare event and are born one in every 1,500 cases.
“This is the first time we've witnessed such a case, but the operation was successful,” the doctor said.
