Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has moved up to fourth place in the Women's Tennis Association singles ranking, the WTA reported on its website on Monday.

MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has moved up to fourth place in the Women's Tennis Association singles ranking, the WTA reported on its website on Monday.

Sharapova moved up two spots after reaching the quarterfinals of the US Open. She lost to Dane Caroline Wozniacki in the tournament’s fourth round with a final score of 2-4, 2-6, 6-2. Wozniacki moved up two spots as well, from 11th to ninth place.

Another Russian player, Ekaterina Makarova, was ranked 15th after reaching semifinals.

US Open winner Serena Williams, who defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the finals Saturday with a score of 6-3, 6-3, maintains her number one rank.

Romanian player Simona Halep was again ranked number two, while Czech Petra Kvitova was ranked third, moving up one spot. China’s Li Na, who withdrew from the US Open due to a knee injury, fell from third to sixth place.
