MOSCOW, May 28 (RIA Novosti) – Aleksander Povetkin will use a special set of tactics to win the fight against Manuel Charr, the Russian boxer’s new coach Ivan Kirpa told RIA Novosti.
“We have worked out a certain scheme how to use Charr’s vulnerabilities to help Aleksander Povetkin win the upcoming match in Moscow,” Kirpa said.
The heavyweight clash between Povetkin and Germany's Manuel Charr is scheduled for Friday at Luzhniki Arena in Moscow.
Manuel “Diamond Boy” Charr, a German professional boxer of Syrian origins, is currently ranked sixth in the World Boxing Council (WBC) list, having only lost to Ukrainian Vitali Klitschko for the WBC world champion in September 2012. Charr lost the fight by a technical knockout in the fifth round. Charr’s last match was held on April 12, when the German boxer beat American Kevin Johnson.
Aleksander Povetkin, a professional Russian boxer and the Athens Olympic champion, won 26 fights in a row in the professional ring – 18 by knockout – and lost only once. Last October, Povetkin was defeated on points in a match against Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko, his last fight to date.
“I can declare with full responsibility that Sasha is 100 percent ready for the bout – for all the 12 rounds of it” Povetkin’s coach told RIA Novosti, adding that his training began three months ago and included general physical training in the beginning followed by technical and tactical training.
Povetkin and Charr will fight on Friday night for the WBC International Heavyweight title, currently held by Bermane Stiverne.
The heavyweights met at an official press conference on Monday. Both Povetkin and Charr showed respect for one another, but at the same time each boxer expressed a determination to win.
“Alexander Povetkin will not stop me on my way to the world title. I am very grateful to him, his team and especially promoter Andrey Ryabinsky for giving me this chance. Unfortunately hardly anyone dares to fight me. Potvetkin isn’t afraid, but he will bitterly regret it. I will defeat him,” Manuel Charr told the journalists.
Povetkin returned the favor: “I take my hat off to Manuel Charr for coming here to Moscow to face me in the ring. He’s a good boxer and has proved that he has heart. But against my quality he has no chance. This is a great fight, but for me it’s just a transitional stage on the road to even more important fights.”
A special guest at the fight is former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield who arrived in Moscow to watch the fight.
