KIEV, September 30 (R-Sport) The Football Federation of Ukraine announced Monday that it would appeal its punishment of one game behind closed doors due to racist chanting at a recent World Cup qualifier.

FIFA gave Ukraine the order on Friday citing “several racist and discriminatory incidents” related to reports of neo-Nazi banners and monkey chants during Ukraine’s 9-0 home win over San Marino earlier this month.

As a result, Ukraine’s next home World Cup qualifier against Poland on October 11, a fierce local rivalry, will be played in an empty stadium, something the FFU vehemently opposes.

“We will use every opportunity and provide all the necessary evidence to make it clear to FIFA that you cannot react in this way,” FFU first vice president Sergei Storozhenko said in a website statement. “We are going to appeal to FIFA to review the documents urgently.”

In addition to the stadium ban, FIFA also fined the Ukrainian football association 45,000 Swiss francs ($50,000).

Ukraine is second in World Cup qualifying Group H, one point behind England with two games remaining. Along with Poland, Ukraine co-hosted Euro 2012, around which there were sporadic reports of racist behavior.
