16-Year-Old Lithuanian Breaks World 100m Breaststroke Record

Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, aged 16, broke the world record in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke at the world aquatics championships in Barcelona on Monday.

BARCELONA, July 29 (R-Sport) - Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte, aged 16, broke the world record in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke at the world aquatics championships in Barcelona on Monday.

Meilutyte swam to victory in a time of 1 minute 4.35 seconds, shaving 0.10 seconds off the existing record held by Jessica Hardy of the United States.

Earlier in the day, she had set a new European record in qualifying.

Meilutyte, who lives and trains in Britain, was one of the stars of last year’s Olympics in London, winning gold in the 100m breaststroke at the age of just 15.
