Flare-Wielding Fans Soaked With Water
Russian football fans complained to prosecutors Tuesday after a section of the crowd was soaked with cold water from a fire hydrant when flares were lit during a match.
TOMSK, Russia, November 20 (R-Sport) - Russian football fans complained to prosecutors Tuesday after a section of the crowd was soaked with cold water from a fire hydrant when flares were lit during a match.
The incident occurred at a game between second-tier sides Sibir Novosibirsk and FC Tomsk on October 31.
The complaint comes three days after Dynamo Moscow’s goalkeeper suffered eye injuries from a smoke bomb thrown by a fan.
“[The fans] point out that people with pyrotechnics were let into the away end but police didn’t react after they were lit and stadium employees used the fire hydrant in a case of vigilantism,” Tomsk fan club leader Sergei Osipov told RIA Novosti.
A joint statement from host team Sibir and stadium management said the fire service hosed down the stand because it was quicker and safer than using a fire extinguisher to put out the flares.
Former Birmingham City striker Garry O'Connor plays for Tomsk.
