Ex-Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Mike Murphy has been released by Spartak Moscow, the KHL team said Thursday.

MOSCOW, November 2 (R-Sport) -Ex-Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Mike Murphy has been released by Spartak Moscow, the KHL team said Thursday.

The release came two days after new coach Fyodor Kanareikin joined with a mission to lift the four-time Soviet champion off last place in the Western Conference.

“We thank Mike for the job he did and wish him luck in his future career,” the team said in a website statement.

The Canadian goalie conceded 23 goals in his seven KHL appearances since joining Spartak in June after his three-year NHL entry contract expired.

His NHL experience is limited to two games for the Hurricanes last season.

In the Ontario Hockey League, Murphy was named goaltender of the year twice in succession while with the Belleville Bulls.
