Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg became the fourth KHL team to fire a coach this month after Andrei Shayanov confirmed to R-Sport on Sunday that he had lost his job.

Avtomobilist has the worst record of any KHL team with just four wins in 20 games and is already 19 points adrift of the last playoff place in the Eastern Conference.

Shayanov had only been in charge since June, following earlier spells as coach of Russia’s junior national team and as acting coach of KHL team Barys Astana.

“They told me about it yesterday evening,” Shayanov said of his firing.

“I think we lost a lot, but I wanted to coach the team a bit longer. I didn’t expect it.”

Shayanov refused to say what reason the management had given for the firing, and declined to comment on a possible successor.

Former NHL defenseman Igor Ulanov has been linked with the Avtomobilist job in the Russian media.

The team has reached the KHL playoffs only once, in the 2009-10 season, when it lost in the first round to eventual conference finalist Ak Bars Kazan.

Earlier this month, Dynamo Minsk coach Kari Heikkila became the first coach to be fired this season, and he was joined last week by Atlant's Janne Karlsson.

Josef Jandac lost his job at Lev Prague on Saturday after a seven-game losing streak.
