Two third-period goals brought Salavat Yulaev Ufa a 2-0 win at Sibir Novosibirsk on Thursday, lifting the 2011 champion back into the playoff zone in the Eastern Conference.

The team from the repubilc of Bashkortostan rises to eigth while Sibir squanders the chance to climb from fifth to second. Traktor Chelyabinsk leads.

Denis Parshin put Salavat Yulaev ahead with his fifth goal of the season, a 46th-minute strike from close range, but his team was put under pressure almost immediately when forward Nikita Filatov earned himself a 10-minute penalty for insulting a referee.

Despite the setback, Salavat Yulaev still managed to outshoot Sibir 10-8 in the third period, and was rewarded with a second goal that shored up its position with four minutes remaining, Vitaly Proshkin striking on a powerplay.

Earlier, former champion Ak Bars Kazan needed penalty shots to defeat outsider Amur Khabarovsk 3-2 in the Far East.

Later Thursday, Ukraine’s Donbass Donetsk hosts Traktor, before Lev Prague plays CSKA Moscow in the Czech Republic.
