Russian football fans are calling for their national team to switch home games from Moscow to the city of Yekaterinburg.

The team traditionally plays at the iconic Luzhniki Stadium in the capital, but the Rusfan movement has started a petition to move two World Cup qualifiers next year to the city in the Ural Mountains.

Yekaterinburg is a host city for the 2018 World Cup, and its Central Stadium is the home arena for the country's under-21 side and stage for the Russian Cup final.

In an open letter to Russian FA chief Nikolai Tostykh, Rusfan said Yekaterinburg supporters had earned the right to see their country play their Group F matches against Luxembourg and Israel in September 2013 up close.

"This can be confirmed the level of organization and the level of support of the fans during youth team matches and Russian Cup matches," the letter said.

"All these matches have benefited from excellent organization, and representatives of the foreign visiting teams like Poland, Moldova, the Czech Republic have underlined the high quality of the pitch."

"UEFA representatives have only positive things to say about these games."

Rusfan is a Moscow-based supporters club that intends to collect 27,000 signatures in support of their initiative. That equals the capacity of the arena in Yekaterinburg.

Russia have played at different stadiums in Moscow but rarely venture outside the capital. A November 14 friendly against the United States in Krasnodar is an exception.

Experienced national team players Sergei Ignashevich and Roman Shirokov have appealed for the national team to mix up their home venues a little, especially for the games against lesser nations that tend to attract fewer fans to the enormous Luzhniki arena.

Fabio Capello's side have got off to a flying start in Group F, winning all of their first four games, including against Portugal, and conceding no goals.
