Azerbaijan coach Berti Vogts says the late penalty that saw his team fall to a 1-0 defeat in Russia on Tuesday was the right call and punished naive defending.
Roman Shirokov scored the only goal of the World Cup qualifier on 84 minutes after Ali Gokdemir tripped Vladimir Bystrov on the edge of the box.
"You should not go into such a challenge near the box," Vogts said.
"The referee gave a penalty and we have to respect that. It shows the lack of international experience in the team."
Azerbaijan are fifth in the six-team Group F with one point from three games, while Russia lead by six points from Portugal, who host Northern Ireland later Tuesday.
