John Isner of the United States was forced to battle to beat South Africa's Kevin Anderson in a three-set thriller in the second round of the Shanghai Masters on Tuesday.

Eighth seed Isner had to survive three tie breaks in order to beat world No. 38 Anderson 7-6(3), (8)6-7, 7-6(7).

In round three, world No. 11 Isner will face either France’s Richard Gasquet, seeded 11th, or Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, who earlier knocked out wild card veteran Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 7-5, 6-1.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Milos Raonic knocked out Australia's world No. 60 Marinko Matosevic in a 7-6(4), 6-3 win.

The 21-year-old Canadian will play Marcos Baghdatis in the second round after the Cypriot beat Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-2, 6-2.

World No. 1 Roger Federer will face Taiwanese qualifier Lu Yen-Hsun in the second-round after Lu thrashed local wild card Zhang Ze 6-0, 6-2.

The match will be Federer's first of the tournament after the Swiss received a bye for the first round.
