Alex Ovechkin helped KHL champion Dynamo Moscow to its sixth win of the season, scoring in a 3-2 penalty shootout win over two-time winner Ak Bars Kazan.

The Washington Capitals star was first to score in the shootout in Wednesday's game in Kazan after providing the assist for teammate Konstantin Volkov that leveled the scores at 2-2 in the second period.

Dynamo goaltender Alexander Eremenko made the decisive play, parrying a penalty shot by Ak Bars' Denis Abdullin.

It denied Ak Bars a fifth-straight win but the team from the Republic of Tatarstan still holds the lead in the Eastern Conference with 22 points from 10 games.

Dynamo is sixth in the West, trailing leader Lev Prague by five points.

For lockout refugee Ovechkin it was a second victory in three games since arriving in Russia earlier this month. He was one of the few not to score in 7-2 drubbing of Dynamo Minsk, then found the target in a 3-1 defeat against SKA St. Petersburg on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk beat Avtomobilist Ekaterinburg 4-2 at home to heap on misery on the Urals team, which has lost five out of its last six.

Neftekhimik, recently deprived of No. 1 NHL draft pick Nail Yakupov after an illegal lockout transfer from the Edmonton Oilers led to his suspension, is third in the East with 19 points, while Avtomobilist is second from bottom on 11th.

The bottom team in the East, Yugra Khanty-Mansiysk, travelled to Bratislava only to suffer its fifth consecutive defeat at the hands of Slovan on penalty shots 4-3. Slovan is third in the West and on a five-game winning streak.

Dynamo Minsk beat Amur Khabarovsk on the road 3-2 to clinch the first victory after four consecutive defeats.

Minsk leapfrogged Spartak Moscow to take 10th place in the West with 11 points after 10 games, while Amur stays fifth in the East with 13 points after 11 games.
