Russian biathlete Olga Zaitseva said Sunday she had a “wonderful” summer biathlon world championships after winning two gold medals and a silver.

Zaitseva added silver in the pursuit Sunday to her earlier gold medals in the mixed relay and sprint at the championships in the Russian city of Ufa, near the Ural Mountains.

“For me the world championships have been wonderful,” said Zaitseva, a double Olympic biathlon champion, on the Russian Biathlon Union website.

“I’m satisfied with my silver medal today because you don’t always manage to win a prize.”

Gold in the pursuit went to Ukraine’s Vita Semerenko with another Ukrainian, Elena Pidgrushnaya, third.

Also Sunday, Russia’s men swept the podium in the pursuit, with Alexei Volkov winning gold from Maxim Chudov and Andrei Makoveev. Russia also won all three men’s medals in Saturday’s pursuit, Chudov winning that race from Volkov and Anton Shipulin.

Summer biathlon originally developed as a way for athletes in the traditional winter sport to keep fit during the off-season.

The competitors use rollerskates to simulate skis, while the shooting part of the contest can be left unchanged.
