NHL stars Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Gonchar have signed lockout contracts with KHL team Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the Russians said Sunday.

The deadline for averting a lockout passed Saturday with the NHL and the players’ association expired failing to agree terms on a collective contract.

Earlier this week, the KHL published a list of criteria that restricts which players from North America could get lockout ice time in Eastern Europe.

Both Malkin and Gonchar fulfill these criteria, Metallurg said.

“The agreement is for the 2012-2013 season and complies with all the articles of the order of signing contracts with the NHL players in the event of a lockout,” a statement on the Metallurg website said.

Forward Malkin has a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins and defenseman Gonchar is contracted to the Ottawa Senators.

Both of them have played for Metallurg before, Malkin from 2003 to 2006 and Gonchar in the 2004-2005 season during the previous NHL lockout.

Malkin, 26, joined Pittsburgh in September 2006 and made an immediate impact with a goal in each of his first six games. In 2009 Malkin helped the Penguins to the Stanley Cup.

Four-time All-Star Malkin came back from a 15-goal season plagued by a knee injury in 2010-11 to become NHL top-scorer last season with 50 goals and 59 assists.

He contributed 11 goals and eight assists as Russia won the 2012 World championships in May, and was named MVP.

Gonchar, 38, began his North American career in 1994 and played for the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the Stanley Cup alongside Malkin in 2009 for the Pennsylvania team.
