MOSCOW, September 10 (RIA Novosti)
Anzhi Makhachkala are able to win the Europa League this season, the club’s general manager Aivaz Kaziakhmedov said Monday.
The Russian side reached the group stage of the tournament after sauntering through three qualifications rounds without conceding a single goal.
“Our task is to win Europa League. In my opinion, it is a realistic task, considering the squad that we have,” Kaziakhmedov said.
On Monday, the Russian side unveiled two new signings in promising young forward Nikita Burmistrov from Amkar Perm and French midfielder Lassana Diarra from Real Madrid.
Anzhi’s general manager praised their solid summer transfer campaign, adding that Diarra and Burmistrov will make the team stronger.
“Results in the Europa League showed that those signings we had made through these two months were effective. I think that the guys who joined our team today will only strengthen those actions that have already been made.”
Other summer acquisitions have started justify themselves with the Russian prodigy Fyodor Smolov scoring his first goal in a Europa League match against Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem and Ivorian striker Lacina Traore hitting six goals for his new team already.
Anzhi’s first group stage match is away to Italy’s Udinese on September 20, with Liverpool and Young Boys of Switzerland completing Group A.

The British experience can be instructive for Russia. London retains its British Commonwealth if it wants to use this as a foundation for integration in the future. That’s a valuable lesson for Russian experts who are calling for an end to “ineffective” associations like the CIS, the Russian World and others.
