The KHL is set to expand into two more countries next year, with Milano Rossoblu from Italy and Medvescak Zagreb of Croatia on course to join, league president Alexander Medvedev said Tuesday.

Milano was in talks to join during last season, but the plans fell apart for financial reasons, while Medvescak already plays in a foreign competition, the Austrian league.

"It's absolutely serious, two candidates, Zagreb and Milan," Medvedev said.

"They're working to the timetable, the timetable's being implemented completely and if everything continues like that, then we'll see two new teams next season."

This year's KHL season sees two new teams making their debut, Slovakia's Slovan Bratislava and Ukraine's Donbass Donetsk.

The league also expanded into the Czech Republic, when existing KHL team Lev Poprad relocated from Slovakia to the Czech capital Prague.

Medvedev has previously said his long-term vision for the KHL is a league spanning all of Europe after recruiting the best teams from the national leagues.

The 2012-13 season got under way earlier Tuesday when last season's champion Dynamo Moscow beat Avangard Omsk in the curtain-raising Lokomotiv Cup.
