Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg are to offer a new contract to goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev, coach Luciano Spalletti said Tuesday.

Spalletti said the club would continue a policy of retaining experienced Russian players after giving a contract extension to striker Alexander Kerzhakov earlier this month.

"First, we extended the contract with Kerzhakov, now it is time to renew the contract with Malafeev," Spalletti said.

"I do not see him in a different league, he will remain with us."

Malafeev, who has 29 caps for Russia, is already contracted at Zenit until 2015.

Malafeev announced his retirement from international football on Monday, saying his wished to spend more time with his two children, whom he was left to raise on his own after his wife Marina died in a car crash in March last year.

Malafeev played every match of Russia's unsuccessful Euro 2012 campaign as his main rival for the No. 1 jersey, CSKA Moscow's Igor Akinfeev, was still unfit after a crucial ligament injury.

The team suffered a group-stage exit, with Malafeev failing to keep a single clean sheet.

New Russia coach Fabio Capello chose Akinfeev to start in his first game in charge, a friendly against Ivory Coast on August 15, which was widely understood as a signal that Malafeev would revert to a substitute role.

Malafeev won three Russian titles and the 2007-08 UEFA Cup with Zenit, playing for the St. Petersburg side his entire career since 1999, making 400 appearances and conceding 388 goals.
