The 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic city of Sochi is 70 percent ready to cater for disabled visitors, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said Wednesday.

The 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic city of Sochi is 70 percent ready to cater for disabled visitors, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak said Wednesday.

Russia is using the Olympics as a catalyst to provide better facilities to disabled people all over the country, and hopes to turn Sochi into a model city.

Kozak, attending the ceremonial raising of the Russian flag in the Paralympic village in London, where the Summer edition is taking place, insisted preparations for providing disabled access in Sochi were ahead of schedule.

"Today, the plan is 70 percent completed," he said. "We are confident that after we finish this work, Sochi will be one of the country's exemplary cities when it comes to creating a barrier-less environment."

Asked to compare Sochi with the British capital for disabled access, Kozak said: "The scale of Sochi is smaller, so in these years of preparation we can equip the whole city as London over many years."

He acknowledged that in London, which is renowned for taking the needs of disabled people into consideration, "we have something to aim for."

The 2014 Winter Paralympics will be held from March 7 to 16, and feature five sports: sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, biathlon and cross country skiing, alpine skiing and snowboarding, a debut event.
