Russia has set a target of coming top of the medal table at its home Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014, the head of the Russian Olympic Committee told R-Sport on Wednesday.
Russia's 11th place finish in the medals table in Vancouver in 2010 was its worst-ever finish, with just three gold medals, compared to 14 for hosts nation Canada, which topped the table.
"As for the Olympic Games in Sochi, we have a task to come first in the medal rankings," Alexander Zhukov said.
"It is quite difficult to do, but we have a rather big potential for medals."
Russia has topped the medals table once at the Winter Olympics, in 1994 in Lillehammer, when the country's athletes won 11 gold, eight silver and four bronze medals to beat Norway into second place.
The Sochi Olympics will take place from February 7 to 23.
