Esparza, Kom Box to Women's Olympic Flyweight Bronze

Marlen Esparza of the United States and Indonesia's Mary Kom won bronze medals in the flyweight division of the first Olympic women's boxing tournament on Wednesday.

Marlen Esparza of the United States and Indonesia's Mary Kom won bronze medals in the flyweight division of the first Olympic women's boxing tournament on Wednesday.

Esparza, 23, was defeated 10-8 in the semifinal by three-time world champion Ren Cancan of China.

Kom, meanwhile, was thrashed 11-6 in her semifinal by second-seeded Briton Nicola Adams.

Ren and Adams clash Thursday in the final.

Women's boxing is making its debut in the Olympics this year. Bouts consist of four two-minute rounds, as opposed to the three three-minute rounds for the men.

Both semifinals losers are awarded bronze medals, with the semifinal winners battling it out for gold and silver.
