U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps won gold in the men's 200 meters individual medley on Thursday.

Phelps took his 20th career medal and 16th gold when he stormed home in 1 minute, 54.27 seconds, and also became the first male swimmer to win the same individual event in three consecutive Olympics.

"To be able to win the gold medal and repeat three times is something pretty special," Phelps said.

Phelps, who has said London will be his last Olympics, praised Lochte's performance and touted South Africa's Chad le Clos, who won the 200 meters butterfly Tuesday, as a star of the future.

"Ryan has probably been one of the toughest competitors ever to swim against," he said.

"We're seeing a lot more competitors coming up, you see someone like Chad is going to be somebody very fun to watch for the next couple of years."

Ryan Lochte, who won the 400m medley on Saturday, took the silver in 1:54.90, while Hungary's Laszlo Cseh won bronze in 1:56.22.
