World No. 1 Roger Federer beat Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin to reach the Olympics quarterfinals Wednesday.
Federer eventually beat Istomin 7-5, 6-3 after coming under pressure in a first set where he was almost broken by the world No. 35.
The Swiss seven-time Wimbledon champion will now face either 10th seed John Isner of the United States or Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, seeded seventh, in the quarterfinals.
