The McLaren duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button made a powerful statement in Friday’s first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton topped the time charts with a lap of 1 minutes 22.821 seconds, with Button one-tenth of a second slower.

McLaren have a strong pedigree at the Hungaroring, winning four of the last six races at the venue.

Championship leader Fernando Alonso was the best of the rest with a time of 1 minute 23.397 seconds as some teams struggled to stop their cars overheating in the Hungarian sun.

The Red Bulls of reigning champion Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were notably off the pace, with Vettel’s lap of 1 minute 24.608 seconds good enough only for 15th.

Webber, who won the 2010 Hungarian race, was 13th with a time of 1 minute 24.546 seconds.

Russian driver Vitaly Petrov managed 19th with a lap of 1 minute 26.440 seconds, two places and three-tenths of a second faster than his teammate Heikki Kovalainen.
