Former England coach Fabio Capello has agreed the “basic principles” of a contract to take the vacant Russia job and will return to Moscow on Friday, the head of the Russian Football Union told R-Sport on Thursday.

Capello is widely seen as the leading contender for the job, but he will not be confirmed as Russia coach until at least Tuesday, the union’s acting president Nikita Simonyan said.

“The basic principles of the contract have been agreed,” Simonyan said, adding that only “certain details” were left to iron out.

Capello will watch the first round of games in the Russian Premier League at the weekend, which shows he is already starting the job, Simonyan said.

“The day after tomorrow he’ll start work by seeing the match between CSKA Moscow and FC Rostov. After that he’ll fly to Zenit’s game [with Amkar Perm]. So he’s already switching on to the work.”

Dutch coach Dick Advocaat led Russia at Euro 2012 and left after the tournament to join PSV Eindhoven when his contract expired.
