Ferrari's Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso took pole position at a rainy British Grand Prix qualifying session on Saturday.

The Spaniard snatched P1 by just five hundredths of a second from Mark Webber, who looked to have stolen it for Red Bull when he posted the top time just before the heavens opened.

It is Ferrari's first pole position at Silverstone since Rubens Barichello went fastest in 2003.

Two Germans make up the second row, with Mercedes' Michael Schumacher, renowned for his ability in the wet, just out-qualifying reigning champion Sebastian Vettel.

Felipe Massa in the other Ferrari had the final session's fastest time for a long while, but in the end the Brazilian was bumped down to fifth, while 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen was sixth.

There was disappointment for McLaren's British pair Lewis Hamilton and Jensen Button to varying degrees at their home race, as Hamilton could only manage eighth and Button was left in 18th, failing to make it out of the first qualifying session.

Hamilton had to rely on a red-hot lap at the last second to make it into the final qualifying session when he lingered in 12th at one stage in the second session.

It was also a bad day for Caterham, with both drivers failing to make it past the first session despite billing a revamped car they said would give them an extra half-second of pace.

Vitaly Petrov and Heikki Kovalainen posted the 19th- and 20th-fastest times, respectively.

Petrov out-qualified his teammate for only the second time this season.
