The team that finished last in the top tier of Russian basketball this past season, BC Enisey Krasnoyarsk, has appointed a new coach to turn around their fortunes.

Vladislav Konovalov, a 38-year-old assistant coach at Samaran team Krasnye Krylya, signed a one-year deal to join the Siberians, Enisey said on its website.

"I had no doubts and didn't think long over it. I want to tie my career and development as a head coach with Enisey, to make a step forward with this team," Konovalov said in website comments.

Enisey, whose greatest achievement is a regional cup in 1988, lost 16 of its 18 matches in the Professional Basketball League last season, and fared no better in the multi-nation VTB United League, winning just three of 16.

"The last season was difficult for the Krasnoyarsk club, that also means we have nowhere to back down and should move forward," Konovalov said.

Konovalov started his coaching career in 2006 assisting Valery Tikhonenko at CSK VVS Samara. In 2010 season he took a team in Kazakhstan, Kostanay Tobol, to the second place in the Kazkh National League.

Enisey’s president Vladimir Petrokovsky stated that the supervisory board wanted to give a chance to a young and ambitious coach “who will grow along with Enisey.”

The PBL is set to dissolve as of next season, when the top Russian teams including Euroleague finalist CSKA Moscow will compete solely in the VTB league.
