Local favorite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battled past world No. 45 Fabio Fognini in straight sets Friday to make the fourth round of the French Open.

Tsonga, seeded fifth, beat the Italian 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, hitting 40 winners to Fognini's 29 in a match lasting two hours 20 minutes.

It was the second career win over Fognini for the Frenchman, coming out on top in Montreal last year.

He could face countryman Gilles Simon in the last 16, if the 11th seeds gets past Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

Earlier Friday world No. 7 Tomas Berdych recovered from a set down to defeat South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in a five-set battle.

Berdych, a semifinalist at Roland Garros two years ago, prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 to knock out 31st seed Anderson and secure a fourth-round meeting with either Argentinean ninth seed Juan Martin del Potro or Croatian 21st seed Marin Cilic.

In the women's event, world No. 2 Maria Sharapova demolished Ayumi Morita of Japan on Friday to book passage into the third round. Sharapova handed out a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing to the world No. 84 and has now spent less than two hours on court in her first two matches at Roland Garros.

Elsewhere, 2009 French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova rolled back the years to defeat world No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 6-2 in their third-round match.

For the Pole, it was her sixth defeat in a row against Kuznetsova, in a streak stretching back to 2009.

Kuznetsova will now play 21st seed Sara Errani after the Italian came back from a first-set thrashing to defeat 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic 1-6, 7-5, 6-3.
