KHL team Metallurg Magnitogorsk has made a surprise signing, securing ex-New York Rangers wing Mats Zuccarello on a two-year deal, Metallurg said Saturday.

KHL team Metallurg Magnitogorsk has made a surprise signing, securing ex-New York Rangers wing Mats Zuccarello on a two-year deal, Metallurg said Saturday.

As well as playing 52 games for the Rangers in the last two seasons, Zuccarello has represented Norway in three world championships and the 2010 Olympic Games.

“Metallurg Magnitogorsk has signed a contract with forward Mats Zuccarello. The agreement is intended for two years,” Metallurg said on its website.

Zuccarello, 24, joined the Rangers in 2010 as an undrafted free agent and played in the 2010-11 playoffs, but missed much of the 2011-12 season with a fractured wrist.

He was 2010 MVP in the Swedish league with Modo.

Before that he was 2008 MVP at the age of 20 in his native Norway with Frisk
