Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia’s world championship-winning ice hockey team played like a “well-calibrated machine” at the tournament, in comments while meeting the players after their return to Moscow on Monday.

Russia trounced Slovakia 6-2 in Sunday's final in Helsinki to win the world hockey championships title for the fourth time in the modern era and the first time since 2009.

Two goals from Washington Capitals wing Alexander Semin, and four more from Alexander Perezhogin, Alexei Tereshchenko, Pavel Datsyuk and tournament MVP Evgeni Malkin sealed the victory, which marked a clean tournament sweep of 10 wins.

“Everything turned out well. I can’t even remember when a team didn’t lose a single game during the world championships,” Putin said.

“You worked like a well-calibrated machine.”

The Russians displayed skill and mental strength during their charge to the championship title, Putin added.

Russia coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov presented Putin with a puck from the world championships.

Next year’s tournament will also be played in Helsinki and Stockholm, the first time since 1970 that the same hosts have held the tournament two years running.
