Russia and CSKA Moscow defender Vasily Berezutsky pulled out of the Euro 2012 squad with a hip injury on Sunday.

Berezutsky, 29, had been out since the end of March, but returned for CSKA’s derby clash with Spartak Moscow on April 28, only to be substituted at half time.

He was called into Dick Advocaat's provisional 26-man squad last week but said he saw no sense in going to Poland and Ukraine only to spend three weeks on the sidelines.

"I don't see any sense in going to the Euro just for the sake of it and not playing, and it is obvious that I won't be able to play there," Berezutsky told RIA Novosti.

"I had an initial agreement with the coaching staff that I would spend a week with the team, and on the results of that we would take decision [on Euro 2012], but as it turned out, I did not take a week. I came on the pitch today and realized that I can't even run because I'm feeling pain."

Berezutsky said it was at his own initiative that he left the squad.

"I talked with Advocaat, I honestly owned up to that the injury will not allow me to work at full capacity, so now I am packing to go home."

Berezutsky's exit reduces to two the number of players Advocaat must exclude for his final 23-man squad.

Berezutsky, a national team player since 2003, has scored twice in his 61 appearances.

He has cover in squad in the shape of Rubin Kazan defender Roman Sharonov, although the 35 year old, who last played for Russia in 2004, said Sunday he was not sure he would make the cut.

Berezutsky has a record of 223 matches and six goals for CSKA, where he plays alongside his twin brother Alexei, also Russia defender. Both are three-time Russian champions and 2005 UEFA Cup winners.

Earlier, Advocaat issued an ultimatum to Sporting Lisbon midfielder Marat Izmailov to turn up for the national team camp in Moscow by Monday or forget about Euro 2012.
