FC Kuban coach Dan Petrescu wants to bring in three or four top-quality players to mount a challenge for Europe next season, his club said Tuesday.

The Romanian coach took Kuban to a surprise eighth in the table this season after winning promotion for the Krasnodar-based side in 2010.

"We have a great collective, a team, and that's the root of our success," Petrescu was quoted as saying by the club. "As regards the future, we need three or four players of a European level."

The former Chelsea right back said it was vital to keep hold of the current team's core.

Ivorian striker Lacina Traore, the league's third-top scorer with 18 goals in 38 games, has been mooted as an English Premier League transfer target.

"We need to keep those who we have. Only then can we count on success."

Petrescu, 44, suggested the Russian Cup as a way into Europe next season.

His success at Kuban has stirred speculation that CSKA might be interested in his services after the Muscovites finished third in the league and out of Champions League qualification under Leonid Slutsky.

FK Kuban is financed by the regional government, with governor Alexander Tkachev the club chairman.

Tkachev said on his Twitter account this week that he had asked Petrescu to strengthen the side.
