Outgoing Valencia coach Unai Emery will take over from Valery Karpin as Spartak Moscow coach from next season, club owner Leonid Fedun said Sunday.

Spartak snatched the Russian Premier League's second Champions League place in a dramatic final day on Sunday, beating Lokomotiv Moscow 2-0 to leapfrog CSKA Moscow into second.

Despite this, Karpin is not going to continue as the coach, leaving his place to the Spanish specialist, Fedun said.

"We'll have a new coach next season, that will be Unai Emery," Fedun said. "Valery Karpin has built the basis of the team but we need new coaching solutions."

Karpin submitted his resignation in April 2011 after a string of poor results but has carried on in a temporary capacity and had been seeking his own successor.

Karpin had earlier said that Emery, whom he played alongside at Real Sociedad between 1995 and 1996, could be on Spartak’s shortlist, but played down hopes of his appointment.

Emery, 43, will be Spartak’s first foreign coach since ex-Denmark midfielder Michael Laudrup was fired in April 2009.

Karpin scored 28 goals in 117 total appearances at Spartak in the 1990s. He spent 11 seasons in Spain, scoring 68 goals in 378 games playing for Real Sociedad, Valencia and Celta Vigo.

Karpin is expected to remain at Spartak as a general director.
