FC Rostov were consigned to a relegation playoff on Sunday after a 2-1 defeat at FC Tom Tomsk in the Russian Premier League.

Tomsk striker Anton Khazov rounded off a clinical move from the hosts just shy of the hour mark, blasting home from close range after Denis Boyarintsev had intelligently stepped over a first-time cross from the right.

Rostov substitute Dmitry Kirichenko gave the visitors a lifeline five minutes from time, heading home Dragan Blatnyak's free kick from close range.

But Alexei Rebko killed it off in the third minute of injury time with a slotted penalty.

Earlier, Rostov's Argentinean striker Hector Bracamonte thumped a 72nd-minute penalty against a post after Victor Stroev handled in the box.

Rostov defender Vitaly Dyakov scuffed a clear chance just wide in the final minute.

Rostov needed a win and hope that Krylya Sovetov dropped points against Terek Grozny to make up the two-point deficit with the Samara side.

As it is, Rostov end the season 13th in the table on 49 points.

The club, a potential host city for the 2018 World Cup, face Shinnik Yaroslavl in the two-legged playoffs, which will be played later this month.

Shinnik won a chance at a place in next season's Premier League by finishing fourth in the second division.

The first legs are to be held on the 17th and 18th, with the return matches on the 22nd and 23rd.
