Former world champion amateur boxer Albert Selimov has failed to gain a berth at the London 2012 Olympics after he was eliminated on the first day of the qualifying tournament in Trabzon, Turkey.

The referee stopped Selimov’s lightweight bout with Britain’s Sam Maxwell on Sunday after the Russian, who won the second of two European titles in 2010, suffered a bad cut in the second round with the score at 4-4.

Only three boxers in Selimov’s 60 kilogram weight category will claim Olympic places at Trabzon, which offers a chance for European countries to gain extra places in addition to their quota.

Russia will be represented in London by least six boxers across all divisions.

Russia’s other contenders in Trabzon, Maxim Koptyakov, Magomed Omarov and Artem Zaitsev, all remain in the draw and are due to fight Monday.

Dagestan-born Selimov is a three-time Russian champion, winning the European title in 2006 and world title in 2007 as a featherweight, before moving up to lightweight, where he won the 2010 European title in Moscow.
