A shoulder injury will keep Vera Zvonareva out of this month's Fed Cup semifinal against Serbia, the world No. 10 said Thursday.

Confusion had surrounded the inclusion of Zvonareva in the April 21-22 clay-court tie.

The Russian Tennis Federation had announced the country would be represented by Maria Kirilenko, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Vesnina.

That came a day after Russia captain Shamil Tarpishchev said he would pick Zvonareva.

But Tarpishchev backtracked in comments to RIA Novosti on Wednesday, saying he might still choose Zvonareva but her fitness was in question and he did not want to threaten her participation in the French Open and the Olympics.

Zvonareva had the final word Thursday.

"I am sad to announce that due to a shoulder injury I won't be able to present my country," she wrote on her Twitter page.

Zvonareva, 27, who has 12 career titles and is a former world No. 2, has had a modest start to 2012.

Her best showing was at last week's Family Circle Cup in Charleston, where she was knocked out of the quarterfinals by Czech Lucie Safarova.

Four-time Fed Cup champion Russia is considered the overwhelming favorite, with a 3-0 head-to-head record over the Serbs. The last encounter was a 3-2 victory for the Russians in Belgrade.

Russia lost last year's final to the Czech Republic.

The match is on indoor clay at the Megasport Arena in Moscow.
