Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has won the NHL’s Art Ross Trophy for scoring the most points during the regular season for the second time, after racking up 109 points this season.

Malkin scored his 50th goal of the season against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, punching the air as he broke the barrier for the first time.

The achievement was enough for him to finish as the NHL’s second-top goalscorer of the regular season, ten goals behind the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Steven Stamkos.

“"I can't believe it,” Malkin said in comments on the NHL website.

“I didn't think before when I scored 47 that I will score 50. But we see if you work hard, you have a chance."

Four-time All-Star Malkin came back from a 15-goal season plagued by a knee injury in 2010-11, after helping the Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup.

In his first NHL season in 2006-7, Malkin made an immediate impact with a goal in each of his first six games and was named rookie of the year.
