Russia will raise its game after missing out on the medals in the first two events at the World Biathlon Championships in Ruhpolding, Germany, 2010 Olympic bronze medalist Anton Shipulin vowed Saturday.

Evgeny Garanichev was Russia’s highest-placed finisher in Saturday’s sprint, coming in 12th with Shipulin a place behind.

“There are a lot of races ahead and everything will be fine, we’ll muster the strength we need,” he said.

He criticized the condition of the track, saying that it made it almost impossible for biathletes who had fallen behind to catch up with the leaders.

“With every lap, with every minute, the track was falling apart and of course that’s very bad. That’s why the leading group had a small advantage.”

“On the first lap there were still some hard parts, where you could recover, and I moved across to find them, but it fell apart badly on the second and third laps.”

He almost fell on the second and third laps, Shipulin added.

Russia finished fifth in the mixed relay on Thursday, which was won by Norway, with Slovenia second and Germany third, following a controversial finish involving a malfunctioning target and unexpected time penalties.

Saturday also sees the women’s sprint, while the men’s pursuit will take place Sunday. The championships run through March 11.
